The sun was out for the third and final race of Round 2 of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series at Barbagallo today, but unfortunately it did not shine on the Greg Murphy Racing team, whose tough weekend continued.

The #45 GB Galvanising/Wilson Security car of Dale Wood unfortunately did not make the start after sustaining extensive damage to the left front following a start line incident with Andrew Jones in yesterday’s second race.

“We could have rushed around and fixed it overnight, but there was no way to test the car before Race 3,” Greg Murphy Racing managing director Kevin Murphy said. “It’s just too risky to fix a broken race car only to cause more damage because it was rushed. Dale’s sponsors are naturally disappointed, but supportive of our decision to keep the car out of any more trouble.

“Dale was showing great promise over the course of the weekend, and this incident is just the culmination of a great deal of bad luck. We’ll straighten the car out back in the workshop and get some testing done before Townsville in July.”

The remaining Greg Murphy Racing cars were ready to go for the final race of the weekend with different track conditions once again. Grid positions were set using combined results from the first two races, so Marcus Zukanovic started from 10th, Geoff Emery from 14th and Matt Hansen from 21st.

Marcus Zukanovic found pace early in his R & J Batteries Commodore and moved up from 10th to 7th before pressuring Nick Percat for 6th position. Marcus executed a move coming down the hill into Turn 7 but then things went very wrong for both drivers, as Zukanovic explained:

“From my seat, I made a move on Nick on the first lap and got past, I’ve come up the other side, and gone down into Turn 7 and he’s made a move back on me, and I believe I’ve given him plenty of room because I was all the way on the outside.

“I don’t think I was doing anything wrong, and I was up on the kerb, and next thing there was this whack in my right rear and I was headed toward the pitlane fence. I wasn’t sure what took place, I know Nick was on the inside of me, but whether he hit me or I got nudged by (Rodney) Jane I don’t know, because Jane was behind me when I made the move on Nick.”

Zukanovic was able to rejoin the race in 19th place.

The safety car led the field around for several laps while the recovery teams worked to remove Percat’s car, and when the race restarted the Greg Murphy Racing cars all started to make their move.

Zukanovic managed to recover to a 15th-place finish behind team mate Geoff Emery. Matt Hansen also found some pace and moved up to 17th by the chequered flag in the Forpark Australia / Bossen / Australian Custom Moulders entry.

“Without that first safety car, and maybe a later safety car we probably would have moved up a few more spots, because the car definitely came to us in that final race, it was good!” Hansen remarked.

“I had a great time this weekend actually. I took a little while to get used to it, and obviously made a few changes in the set up of the car as well, but other than that we were pretty comfortable.”

Geoff Emery’s final race was a testing one; after several laps behind the safety car he battled to keep his spot in the tight pack to finish 14th. Nevertheless, the Earthex / Wurth / NDD VE Commodore is straight and finished all three of the weekend’s races.

Marcus Zukanovic summed up the weekend.

“Perth has been an okay weekend, I wouldn’t say it was brilliant, and I wouldn’t say it was a total loss, we finished all three races which is definitely a positive,” he said. “I’m learning more and more about the car, so come Townsville, which was a track I was very strong at last year, I’m hoping that with the stuff we’ve now learnt about the car, we can put Barbagallo behind us and keep moving the freight train forward.”

The Greg Murphy Racing team is back racing again in the Dunlop V8 Supercars Series on July 6 at the Reid Park Circuit in Townsville.

With only a few adjustments after Friday practice, including a new tailshaft for the Geoff Emery car, Greg Murphy Racing looked ready to turn heads for qualifying and the first two races in Round 2 of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series at Barbagallo yesterday.

A dry qualifying session saw a nervous Dale Wood waiting in pitlane in the closing stages of the session with his name in P2 on the timing screens before a 60 second flurry of times pushed him back to eighth position in his GB Galvanising / Wilson Technology VE Commodore.

“It was good early on I suppose, sitting in P2,” Wood said. “I thought this will be a good result if we can be on the front row, but very quickly within about 30 seconds we dropped down the order. I’m happy enough with eighth, but you never like to say that, you’re here for one thing and that’s to be up the front. I think we’ll be in a good position and it looks like it might rain for the first race. I’m pretty confident in the wet, we had a good run yesterday.”

Emery qualified his Earthex / Wurth / NDD Commodore in 13th, while Marcus Zukanovic was 15th in his R & J Batteries car and Matt Hansen 20th in the Forpark Australia / Bossen / Australian Custom Moulders entry.

A very wet openining race and a Safety Car intervention on the first lap saw the Greg Murphy Racing cars running mid-pack for most of the race.

Wood picked up a spot early in the race before taking a slide around the back of the circuit, fortunately managing to maintain control of the car. He ended up crossing the line in 17th position.

Zukanovic and Emery swapped places during the first few laps, with Zukanovic ultimately finishing as the best of the GMR cars in 14th. Emery dropped back to 19th as the rain continued to fall on the already waterlogged track. Hansen remained composed and came home in 21st place.

The sun came out and by the time the Dunlop Series competitors had formed on the grid for Race 2, the track was mostly dry. The team made some quick setup changes to the four GMR cars during the break to match the rapidly changing conditions.

For Wood, the race went pear-shaped before he even crossed the control line. Andrew Jones stalled on the start line, and after making a superb start and overtaking a few cars, Wood moved to pass a car to the left, and clipped the side of Jones’ car – destroying the left-front of the car before spearing off into the Turn 1 sand trap.

“It was a very short race for me, like a drag race,” a gutted Wood said. “I got a good start actually, was trying to get through a couple of cars and I had a car to my right, so I had to move to the left, and bang there was Andy Jones, so it was as quick as that. It’s disappointing, I must have hit a black cat or something because the luck just keeps rolling. The boys can’t get the wheel off yet so we’ll have a look tonight and see how we go for tomorrow.”

The safety car led the field around the circuit for several laps before going green, but not for long as GMR’s Matt Hansen took a trip into the Turn 1 sand trap and also unfortunately retired from the race.

The race returned to green for eight laps with Zukanovic crossing the finish line in 11th and Emery in 14th.

“It was a pretty good race, we made a few changes from Race 1 in the wet, anticipating a dry race as we obviously had some issues in the dry qualifying session,” Zukanovic said.

“I feel good about Race 3, I think it will be a good one for us.”

The Greg Murphy Racing team is on track for the third and final race of the weekend at Barbagallo Raceway from 1:05pm Western Standard Time. Grid positions are determined based on points accumulated by the drivers in Races 1 and 2, so Zukanovic will start 11th, Emery 17th, Wood 22nd and Hansen 23rd.

Greg Murphy Racing’s four drivers are feeling confident in the wet leading into Round 2 of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series at Barbagallo, Perth, following two practice sessions in mixed weather conditions yesterday.

Track conditions deteriorated throughout the day at the newly upgraded Barbagallo Raceway as the Greg Murphy Racing team hit the track for practice for the second round of the series.

The first session was a slightly damp affair, with a greasy Turn 7 throwing several cars into the sand trap including Dale Wood, who triggered one of many red flags for the day’s events.

The 40 minute session ended with Geoff Emery in eighth, Marcus Zukanovic in 11th, Dale Wood in 14th and Matt Hansen in 22nd.

The second practice session saw slower times across the board due to even wetter conditions and decreased traction on the waterlogged circuit but this proved to be ideal for GMR drivers Wood and Emery who both secured times within the top five.

Wood (GB Galvanising / Wilson Technology VE Commodore) posted a blistering lap, second only to Chaz Mostert, while Geoff Emery (Earthex / Wurth / NDD VE Commodore) was fourth on the time sheets in a session marred by red flags and sand trap adventures by other competitors.

“Clearly we’ve made some advancements in the car this weekend,” Emery said. “We had some drive issues earlier on and we’ve made some changes to the suspension in the car and made some really good gains this weekend, so hopefully we are going to move that forward into tomorrow morning’s qualifying session.

“Bring it on, we used to be a bit nervous about the rain in these cars, but we seem to be all over it now.”

“I think the car will still be quick even in the dry conditions with the changes we’ve made, so I’m really looking forward to a strong weekend.”

Marcus Zukanovic (R & J Batteries VE Commodore) and Matt Hansen (Forpark Australia / Bossen / Australian Custom Moulders) came in 15th and 16th respectively, Zukanovic opting not to use a new set of wet tyres, preferring to keep the green set for qualifying.

“I decided to save my new set of wet tyres and went out today on an older set,” he said. “I can definitely feel it when braking, but I think the new set for qualifying will be well worth it.

“We’ve got the numbers right, the car sorted and I can’t wait to get out there for qualifying and Race 1. It’s been a long time since Adelaide.”

The Greg Murphy Racing Team is on track for qualifying for the weekend’s opening race at Barbagallo Raceway from 9:00am Western Standard Time.

Greg Murphy Racing will run four cars in Round 2 of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series at Barbagallo, with Matt Hansen joining the team’s existing three drivers, Dale Wood, Geoff Emery and Marcus Zukanovic.

It will be Hansen’s second drive with GMR; he also drove with the team in the Barbagallo round of last year’s series.

Hansen, a regular competitor in the Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Car Series on the Shannons Nationals program, tested at Winton today with GMR’s other drivers, and the West Australian is looking forward to competing at his home venue.

“I love these cars,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to Barbagallo and having a good race at home.

“I drove the Shannons car yesterday, and I noticed a big difference in the tyre, and the way the car drives and reacts.”

Greg Murphy Racing Managing Director Kevin Murphy says running an extra car is well within the team’s capabilities.

“We worked with Matt last year and it was a pleasant experience for us all,” he said. “We ran four cars for most of last year, so there’s no reason to think we’re extending ourselves more than we should be.

“Three of our employees already work with Matt on his Shannons Series car, so he’s working with some of the same people again. Settling into the car shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

“The three guys that are with the team as our permanent drivers for the year, Geoff, Marcus and Dale should go pretty well at Barbagallo I would think. Dale hasn’t been there in a V8 before, but the other two have, so we would be expecting them to run somewhere near the front.

“It’s Matt’s home track and he knows the circuit well, so after having a good test day today, we would expect him to settle in and go reasonably well.”

For more from the drivers, check out the test day review video.

The Barbagallo round of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series will be held from May 4-6.

A top-10 finish for new Greg Murphy Racing Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series recruit Marcus Zukanovic was the highlight of a mixed second race for the three-car team in the opening round of the series at the Clipsal 500, Adelaide.

After starting 12th, the “Z-Man” overtook three cars in his R & J Batteries / Earthex / De Grey Civil Pty Ltd / Autosparky.com VE Commodore to finish ninth, and eighth for the weekend.

It was a fine recovery for Zukanovic, who started the opening race at the back of the grid after causing a red flag in qualifying, and he is very positive about the rest of the season.

“This weekend was about getting to know the team, and I’m really happy with how the car went,” he said.

“I felt more and more comfortable in the car as the weekend progressed, and I don’t think it will take long before we’re challenging for really good results.”

Geoff Emery had a tougher race, spinning to the back of the pack on Lap 1 due to contact from another competitor. From there, he picked people off and worked his way up to 18th in the Earthex / Wurth / NDD Commodore, but was left ruing the lack of safety cars in the race.

“Our pace was really good and the car was great, but the field spread out which made it harder to make up positions,” he said. “If there had been a safety car, it would have allowed me to overtake some more cars before the end.”

Dale Wood see-sawed up and down the order from his starting position of 15th, eventually finishing 11th. He was happy with the result after missing a lot of track time with Thursday’s practice crash.

“I’m still getting used to the car, but I can see things are definitely going to get better because it is a fantastic team,” Wood said.

Greg Murphy Racing’s drivers will now turn their attention to the next round of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series at Barbagallo, May 4-6.

Greg Murphy Racing’s three Dunlop V8 Supercar Development Series drivers all impressed in their own way in yesterday’s first race of 2012 at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

Geoff Emery was the highest-placed finisher in seventh, steadily working his way forward after qualifying in 11th position.

In his return to the team, Dale Wood put in a solid performance, improving from his starting position of 18th to finish 15th. It was a consistent performance from Wood, who is still getting used to his GMR VE Commodore.

Marcus Zukanovic grabbed plenty of attention in the third GMR entry, charging his way from last on the grid to finish 12th. Zukanovic had been excluded from qualifying after causing a red flag during the session, but some enthusiastic driving and good setup work from the engineers allowed the “Z-man” to storm his way into a much more creditable position.

“The car was really good and it’s only going to get better from here,” Zukanovic said.

The second Dunlop Series race will be held today at 1:05pm Adelaide time, and shown live as part of Channel 7’s coverage of the Clipsal 500.

Greg Murphy Racing supporters are reminded to like the Greg Murphy Racing Facebook Page for live updates on the team’s progress throughout the weekend, and a full weekend review will follow today’s race.

A smart tyre gamble for Greg Murphy Racing almost produced a stunning result for Geoff Emery and Tony Bates in the final Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series race for 2011 at Homebush yesterday.

On a very damp track, the majority of the field elected to start the race on wet tyres, but Emery and Bates opted for slicks. The two drivers slipped and slid their way down the order in the early laps of the race, with Bates actually spinning on the greasy track and dropping to last, but as the circuit dried out, the slick tyres came into play and Emery and Bates charged through the field.

Emery eventually finished sixth in the AC Delco / Simworx / NDD Commodore after overtaking multiple cars in the final few laps of the race. The five-time Commodore Cup champion set the fastest lap of the race and was over six seconds a lap quicker than the race leaders in the closing laps, and only missed out on an even better result due to the surprising absence of safety car interventions.

“I was flying at the end of the race and overtaking about three cars a lap,” Emery said. “If only there had been a safety car, I reckon I could have won that race, because I had a huge pace advantage over everyone on wet tyres at the end. They were all sliding around and struggling to get traction out of corners, and I was driving past them like they were standing still.”

Tony Bates also staged an exceptional recovery after his first lap spin, setting the second-fastest race lap and working his way into 10th place in the very last corner of the race in the Favourit.com / Alternative Freight Services entry.

“I was kicking myself after I spun on the first lap,” Bates said. “For the first few laps it was extremely slippery and I thought we had made the wrong call on tyres for sure. But as the race progressed and the track dried out, it started to come to me and I was able to overtake really easily towards the end.”

The driver Bates overtook in the last corner was Daniel Jilesen. Starting at the rear of the field after his Race 1 DNF, Jilesen chose wet tyres and was electric in the opening laps of the race, setting times among the quickest for the drivers who had chosen wets as he clawed his way up the order in his R & J Batteries / Earthex / King Gee-supported car.

“It was a good race, and good to be one of the fastest cars on wets,” Jilesen said. “I worked my way into the top-10 but the tyres were dead at the end and I couldn’t quite hold Tony out in the last corner.

“Overall, it’s been an up-and-down season, but it was good to score enough points to finish in the top-10 in the championship.”

Nick Cassidy was unfortunately forced into retirement after his third shock absorber failure of the weekend. Cassidy had worked his way up into 10th position before the breakage, and was showing good pace in the Fuchs / Drillpro / Tricor Commodore.

“It was a disappointing end to the weekend, but in that race at least I was making good progress through the field,” Cassidy said.

The Greg Murphy Racing team now moves into an off-season period, with the team’s 2012 driver lineup to be confirmed in the new year.

Greg Murphy Racing driver Daniel Jilesen missed out on a strong race result after a stunning qualifying performance today at Homebush for the final round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series.

Jilesen qualified an outstanding fourth in this morning’s qualifying session. After comfortably maintaining his fourth place in the opening laps of the race, Jilesen was unfortunately forced to retire the R & J Batteries / Earthex / King Gee Commodore after it developed a brake problem with just five laps remaining in the 17 lap race.

“Qualifying was good,” Jilesen said. “I didn’t get a lap in at the start because of traffic and red flags, but I managed to put in a clean lap at the end and fourth was my equal-best result of the year.

“The race as going really well until I arrived at a corner and sailed up the escape road with no brakes. It was really disappointing and we’ve just had no luck over the last few meetings.”

Geoff Emery (AC Delco / Simworx / NDD Commodore) was next best of the GMR drivers, qualifying 13th and finishing the race in the same position position after a consistent performance, while Tony Bates (Favourit.com / Alternative Freight Services) was 15th. Bates had qualified in 17th position, and managed to avoid sustaining major damage in an opening lap contretemps with Rodney Jane and Marcus Zukanovic, and worked his way up to 13th position before making an error on the final lap and dropping to 15th.

“I survived the first lap incident, and then I was driving well and passing people, but I just braked a bit late on the last lap, nudged the tyre wall, had to reverse out and lost a couple of places,” Bates explained.

Nick Cassidy qualified his Fuchs / Drillpro / Tricor car 22nd after suffering a broken shock absorber during the session. It was the second such failure for Cassidy in as many days – the 17-year-old also had a shock failure during yesterday’s second practice session.

Cassidy raced well, making up several places at the start before coming together with another competitor and bending a steering arm. He was also an unfortunate bystander in Bates’s last lap incident, coming to a complete stop and losing positions as a result. He ended the race in 17th position.

“I was going OK at the start, I made up some places and I was feeling more and more comfortable in the car,” Cassidy said. “Unfortunately, I struggled after coming together with another competitor and bending the steering arm, and then I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time when Tony went off on the last lap.

“I don’t think my final finishing position was an accurate reflection of where I should have been, so I look forward to making up more positions tomorrow.”

Race 2 of the Fujitsu Series, the final race of 2011, starts at 12:55 AESDT tomorrow afternoon, and will be shown LIVE on Channel 7 of part of the Sydney Telstra 500 coverage.

Greg Murphy Racing has scored a major coup for the final round of the 2011 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series at Homebush, with two-time V8 Supercar Championship-winning engineer Paul Forgie coming into the team to engineer the #45 Drillpro / Fuchs / Tricor VE Commodore of Nick Cassidy.

While Forgie will be working on a Commodore V8 Supercar this weekend, most motorsport fans will remember Forgie for his success with Ford, and specifically Marcos Ambrose, who he engineered to back-to-back titles at Stone Brothers Racing in 2003 and 2004. In more recent times, Forgie has overseen New Zealand driver Shane Van Gisbergen, and guided him to race wins at Hamilton and Hidden Valley this year.

Team owner Kevin Murphy is understandably enthusiastic about securing Forgie’s services for this weekend.

“Paul Forgie will be working alongside Peter Smith, David Slater and Dean Lillie in the race engineering group,” Murphy said.

“Paul will be working to get to know the team this weekend, with the possibility of a future role with Greg Murphy Racing in 2012.

“Paul was quite keen to come and join us and work outside the main game, so the Fujitsu Series suits his plan pretty well. His experience will be a tremendous asset for the team, and a great benefit to any young driver who we would be bringing through in the future, so we’re going to build a relationship with him and see how it all goes.”

While Nick Cassidy will be visiting the Homebush street circuit for the first time this weekend, the other three GMR drivers all have experience at the circuit. Daniel Jilesen rates the circuit as one of the best he has raced on, and is heading to the track with the goal of turning around a form slump over the last three Fujitsu Series rounds, in the R & J Batteries / Earthex / King Gee entry.

Geoff Emery (AC Delco / NDD / Simworx Commodore #48) will be looking to continue his momentum after a well-deserved sixth overall in the previous round of the series at Sandown, while Tony Bates (Favourit.com / Alternative Freight Services Commodore #24) also displayed some good pace at Sandown, particularly in the first race where he finished in the top-10 on merit.

The final round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series will feature two races. The second (Sunday) race will be shown live on Channel 7 as part of the V8 Supercar television coverage.

Geoff Emery has finished as the best of Greg Murphy Racing’s four Fujitsu V8 Supercar drivers in Round 6 of the series at Sandown on the weekend.

The Narre Warren driver started on pole position for Race 2 as a result of his 10th-place finish in Race 1, and converted the strong starting position to a top-5 finish despite a mid-race spin. He then finished the final race in seventh to score an overall result of sixth for the weekend in the AC Delco / Simworx / NDD VE Commodore.

Team owner Kevin Murphy was happy with Emery’s final result.

“It wasn’t a bad outcome at all,” Murphy said. “Overall, he had a pretty good weekend and he came back without some of the damage and incidents he has experienced in recent times. He was probably a bit disappointed that he couldn’t convert his pole position for Race 2 into a win or podium finish, but he still circulated with some pretty reasonable lap times.

“He did the second-fastest lap-time of the race in Race 2, which was a commendable effort considering the calibre of the competition.”

Murphy was also impressed with the efforts of Fujitsu Series debutant Nick Cassidy, who capped off the weekend with a top-10 finish in Race 3, moving forward from 13th in Race 2 and 20th in Race 1 in his VE Commodore, supported by Drillpro, Fuchs and Tricor.

“In Race 2, Nick was using older tyres from Race 1, but still did a reasonable job and moved up to 13th,” Murphy said.

“He moved back up to 10th in Race 3, which was a very good result, really. He passed quite a few cars on his own merit. The changes made to the car seemed to work well and he made clean, well-committed passes.

“He came away from the weekend a bit hard on himself because he expected better, but the car came home practically unmarked. As a team owner, I was extremely happy with his debut performance. He didn’t get out in the first practice session due to a clutch master cylinder problem and qualifying was wet, so he had very limited track time in his first visit to Sandown. He showed great maturity for his young tender age.”

The other two GMR drivers experienced tougher weekends, with Tony Bates unfortunately failing to finish both Sunday races.

Starting from second in Race 2 after his ninth-place in Race 1, Bates actually beat his team mate Emery off the line and took the lead briefly, before running wide at Turn 1 and dropping to third.

A battle ensued between Bates, Emery, Tim Blanchard and Andrew Thompson. Bates tried to take advantage of a minor incident between Blanchard and Thompson at Turn 1, but was just a little enthusiastic in his throttle application and rotated the Favourit.com / Alternative Freight Services Commodore into the Armco.

The GMR team repaired the damage and Bates took the start of Race 3. It soon became apparent that there was a power-steering problem, possibly as a result of the Race 2 incident, and Bates retired from the race rather than risking further damage.

The team mechanics would not have been able to diagnose the problem without removing the steering rack, a task that would have been impossible with the limited time between races.

After crashing in qualifying and failing to start Race 1, Daniel Jilesen battled to move through the field from his rear-of-grid starting position in Race 2. He worked his way up to 12th, but was turned around by another competitor and was forced to pit due to a guard rubbing on a tyre. He lost a lap to the race leaders and soldiered on to finish 18th.

In Race 3, Jilesen brought the R & J Batteries / Earthex / King Gee Commodore home in 13th position after a conservative drive. Importantly, the points he scored allowed him to maintain his top-10 position in the series standings.

“It was a disappointing weekend for Daniel,” Kevin Murphy said. “His results did not reflect the effort he put in. He would have expected to be a bit further up the track, especially in the last race, but after all the damage he sustained earlier in the weekend, it looked like he went into the last race with the sole objective of finishing.”

Round 6 of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series will be telecast this Saturday, November 26, on Channel 7 at 2:30pm AESDT.

Round Results Summary, Fujitsu Series Round 6, Sandown
